Welcome to Camp Indie + How to use this workshop!

Hello Camp Indie Students!

First, Thanks for signing up for Camp Indie: Crafting A Greener World. We are so excited for this class and are happy all of you joined us!

Secondly, WELCOME TO CAMP INDIE!
Here are some tips for using this workshop:

• Start by checking the supply list, make sure you have everything you need!
• After that, Click on the "Tutorials" tab to get access to all of the tutorials in this workshop. Just choose whichever project you want to make and get started!
• Be sure and check out the "Downloads" tab to download the free printables I designed exclusively for this workshop.
• Also, don't forget to add this blogs URL to your favorites, or follow it to make sure you don't lose the link.
• Camp Indie is a work-at-your-own-pace class. No pressure, no deadlines.
• Only students who have registered have access to the Camp Indie Blog, all readers have to be approved by us. Vintage Novel Art Journal

Hey you guys, Here's the first project of camp indie..

I love love love this project! I can't wait to fill this up with doodles, notes, drawings, etc! It's small enough to carry around and the perfect size for mindless creativity. I plan on using mine throughout Camp Indie to jot down ideas and thoughts for my projects. Can't wait to see everyone's Creations! -Miss Tay

Supplies needed:

paper scraps, all close the same size (mine turned out to be about 4x6 in the finished book)

an old novel (I used Nancy Drew)

ribbon, about 12 inches or so is plenty

Tools needed:

paper trimmer and scissors

crop-a-dile/eyelet setter or hole punch

X-acto or craft knife

1. remove pages, cutting the binding out of the book.

2. Arrange your papers in the order you would like them to go, coordinating or contrasting colors, etc.

3. use a clamp or paper clips to hold them all together. Punch two hole evenly spaced apart to create the "book binding"

4. Mark these holes on the inside of the book cover and punch matching holes.

5. Thread ribbon through to attached the pages and tie off. Trim excess. Remove the clamps, embellish if you wish and start filling your journal!

Owl Water Bottle Cozies

Hey all! Having fun yet? We are!

Supplies needed:

an old sweater(choose your favorite color!)

ribbon, about 2 ft long

felt or fabric scraps ( We like vintage polyester)

Tools needed:

scissors

embroidery thread

needle or sewing machine

1. Lay out the sweater flat and place the water bottle on top of one of the sleeves. Cut the sleeve off about 1 inch above the top of the bottle.

2. Trace the bottom of the bottle, giving about a half inch extra into a circle. Pin to the leftover portion of the sweater and cut out the circle, which will be the bottom of the cozy

3. Flip the sweater sleeve inside out and sew the circle to the bottom of the sweater tube.

4. Use the ribbon and sew in a drawstring

When doing this, I wanted double the strength of the ribbon, so I folded the ends of the ribbon to the center and stitched them in place so that I had a loop for each end.

5. Flip right side out and embellish with fabric and felt. Since we chose to do owls, cut a "mask" shape for the eyes, a triangle for the beak and a "teardrop" shape for the tummy. Add eyes-either felt, fabric, or perhaps buttons?

6. Slide your water bottle in and enjoy!

Recycle your old compact!

Supplies: Old Compact, Paper, Embellishments, Felt

Tools: Sewing Machine, Scissors, Ruler

1. Measure the top of your compact and cut a circle out of paper to fit. Glue it on and attach embellishments.

2. Measure the inside circle of your compact and cut 2 circles out of felt making sure to add a 1/4 seam allowance. Sew your felt circles together, clip strings.

3. Glue into your compact and insert pins! :)

Recycled Map Art

This Project is meant to be a challenge for you. The base for this project is an old map and the rest is up to you. The goal is to build layer upon layer. In my step by step tutorial below- I have included a few extra techniques that help enhance depth and layers.

Tools: Paint brushes (or not, finger painting is *always* fun.), Paper trimmer or scissors

Supplies: Paint and Ink, Paper and/or fabric, an Old map, a sheet of Cardstock or Chipboard/Cardboard, picture frame, Diamond glaze or other3d adhesive(optional), velvet flocking(optional), and salt(optional).

1. Start by trimming you fave part of an old map to the correct size of your frame. Back with Cardstock or chipboard so that it is firm enough.

2. A fun technique to add is Tea-dyeing or coffee staining. Brew about a cup of either tea or coffee, and soak your map so that it takes on an aged look. If it crinkles up when it dries, don't worry, simply use an iron and flatten it out.

3. Begin to build up your layers. Since I went with an ocean theme, I used paper bits and scraps and hand cut whimsical waves and adhered them down.

To add more dimension to these, I added "blobs" of diamond glaze to the caps of the waves. You could also add salt sprinkled ontop of wet glaze or paint for a sparkle.

4. Continue to embellish your map, what theme are you going for? I chose to hand cut clouds patterned paper and painted a border. I also added white velvet flocking to my clouds and hand painted my lettering.

Supplies: Yarn, Embellishments if desired

Tools: Crochet hook, Scissors

1. Chain 70 or until it fits around your tree

2. Rows 1+ Double crochet til the end of the row, turn around and repeat. Keep double crocheting until its the height you desire. This one has 14 rows.

3. Attach Embellishments.

4. wrap around your tree and lace up the back.

Cassette Tape mini Notebook

Supplies needed:

old cassette tapes

notebook paper

ribbon

stickers or embellishments

Tools needed:

scissors

hot glue

small screw driver (or a craft knife works :)

sewing machine or stapler

1.Unscrew the tape and remove all the tape guts (everything except for the plastic exterior frame).

2. paint if desired. I like to do this because it gives it more color and will cover up the glue.

3. Trace the general shape onto folded paper (in the amount of pages you want) and cut out.

4. Sew or staple these pages together to form a "book" and glue the notebook paper inside the tape cassette pieces, taking care to glue so that it will open and close like a book.

5. Thread the ribbon through the holes and tie off.

6. embellish as desired. These work really great as on-the-go to do lists or grocery lists because they are so small the fit perfectly in your purse. I also made one to jot down random inspiration and project ideas. Enjoy!

Vintage Figure Mobile

This project is one of my favorites and could be done in so many fun and different ways, I can't wait to see all of yours! Post them in the flickr!

Supplies needed:

2 wooden dowels, about 1/2" to 3/4 of an inch 12-18 inches long

4 buttons of your choice

yarn in a pretty color

old necktie or fabric strip

4-6 vintage figurines. (NOTE: it's very important that you have pieces weighing close to the same, otherwise your mobile will not hang straight-they must balance out.)

Tools needed:

hot glue

scissors

1. Wrap dowels in the yarn, don't worry about covering the ends, and gluing as you go, usually every 1-2 inches for security. The tighter they are wrapped, the nicer it will look. Seal the ends with glue and trim up loose strings.

2. place a bit of glue on the center of one dowel and place the other one cross-wise on top. Wrap around all directions of the cross to secure and seal with hot glue. It should look like a " (+) plus sign" when you are finished.

3. Glue the 4 buttons on each end of the dowels to finish the ends.

5. Decide where you would like each vintage figure to hang. You may have to play with it a bit to get it to balance out evenly. Using yarn or ribbons, tie the figures to strings varying in length.

6. Tie the figures to the mobile and seal all the knots with a small amount of glue on each one. Trim excess strings.

Use the necktie or fabric strips to create the hanging cord. I just tied my tie into a pretty bow and secured it with glue. Find a place to hang your mobile and you are all set!!!
